Authentic is a tech-enabled MGA (managing general agent). We design and run insurance programs for specific kinds of businesses, like restaurants, gyms, and power producers. Brokers bring us the businesses that need coverage, and carriers back our policies. Every program runs on a platform we built ourselves, and we own every line of code behind it. Engineers and insurance experts build it side by side in New York and Dayton, Ohio. Since our founding in 2022, we’ve grown to 80+ people and been named to the 2026 CB Insights Insurtech 50.
As a Senior Engineer on the Platform team, you'll shape the core systems every program depends on. You'll make architecture decisions that will matter for years, working side by side with the underwriters and insurance experts who use what you build every day.
What the Platform team owns
- Core insurance services: rating, quoting, policy lifecycle, billing, document generation and extraction
- The shared framework that lets us launch a new insurance program quickly, by configuration instead of custom code
- Integrations with carriers, brokers, and third-party data sources
- Infrastructure, deployment, observability, and developer tooling
What you'll work on
- Lead large, ambiguous projects from start to finish. You'll define the problem, design the system, and ship it, without needing someone to hand you a spec.
- Build for correctness and scale. Insurance systems need to be auditable and exact. You'll design data models and services that handle more programs, more volume, and more complexity as we grow.
- Make the whole team faster. Find the bottlenecks in how we build, test, deploy, and operate, and fix them.
- Raise the reliability bar across the product, infrastructure, and data layers, without slowing the team down.
- Work directly with the business. You'll sit with underwriters and operations teams, understand the real problem, and measure whether what you built actually helped.
- Mentor other engineers and help set the technical standards for a growing team.
Projects you might lead in your first year: Rearchitecting the rating engine to support new lines of business, rebuilding a program-configuration system, event-driven billing and reconciliation.
Our stack
Python · AWS ·Terraform· Kubernetes/ECS · Kafka/SQS· Datadog · other tools. We choose tools for long-term simplicity, and you'll have a real say in where the stack goes next.
The team
You'll join an engineering team of 8 and report to the head of Engineering. Engineers work in New York and Dayton, Ohio, alongside the insurance experts who use the platform.
What success looks like
- First 30 days: Ship to production, learn the insurance domain, and understand how the platform fits together.
- First 90 days: Own a meaningful part of the platform and lead your first significant project.
- First 6 months: Drive a major architecture improvement and become a go-to technical leader across the team.
You might be a great fit if you have
- 5+ years building and running production distributed systems, mostly in Python or Go
- Strong API and data-modeling skills, and a sense for systems that need to be correct as well as fast
- Hands-on experience with AWS, infrastructure-as-code, and modern deployment practices
- Good judgment about when to move fast and when to slow down and get it right
- A habit of owning problems end to end: you clarify what "good" looks like, ask sharp questions, and see things through
Nice to have: experience at a fast-growing startup, especially building something from zero; experience with fintech, payments, insurance, or other regulated or money-moving systems. No insurance background needed. We'll teach you the domain.
Compensation
This role pays a base salary of $188,000– $211,000 and includes meaningful equity, so you’ll have real ownership in what we’re building. Your offer will depend on your experience and skills.
Don't meet every requirement? Apply anyway. We care more about how you think and what you've built than about matching every line.
Our (FTE) benefits
- Competitive salary, equity, and role trajectory
- Comprehensive health benefits for you and your family
- 401(k) plan with company match
- Unlimited PTO
- Paid parental leave
